A movie that I recently saw and thought why did I not see it before…?

“A Beautiful Mind” is a 2001 Oscar-winning film which depicts the struggles of Mathematician John Nash and wife Alicia Nash, they were well known for John’s decades-long battle with schizophrenia which they didn’t let come in the way of their achievements together. By doing some research I discoverd Mr and Mrs Nash sadly passed away in 2015 but the good news is John had recovered from the condition later in life, which he said was done without medication, which is very clear through the movie/book how and why.

The movie reveals, John had developed symptoms of schizophrenia in the late 1950s, when he was around age 30, and yet made groundbreaking contributions to the field of mathematics, including the extension of game theory, or the math of ‘decision making’. He began to exhibit bizarre behaviour and experience paranoia hallucinations and delusions. Over the time, he was hospitalised several times, and was on and off medications.

What touched me most about this story is how even thou John was most intelligent and full of knowledge/ resources yet without the support of his family and friends he could in no way have achieved what we all know him today for. He really was blessed to have it all in the form of supportive colleagues who helped him find jobs where people were protective of him, and a wife who cared for him and didn’t give up on him no matter what! And of course hats off to John who was strong enough to accept the help he was in need of and carried on, even though this must have been tougher than most of can even imagine.

A must watch, an eye opener and heart warming story towards the struggle of Mental illness and everyone involved – You may have come across the saying on the lines of ‘be kind, everyone have their own story’ – this movie shows us why? And my take aways from this most wonderfully inspiring story is – to keep us going ‘we not only need a beautiful mind but also many beautiful hearts around’.
